Development of extraction methods for the quantification of fluorine in plastics by ICP-MS/MS: toward an inter-method study

Plastic recycling is one of the main challenges of the energy transition. Plastics are widely used in many fields (automotive, packaging, and housing) and generate a huge quantity of waste. As mechanical recycling is typically accompanied by degraded plastic properties, chemical recycling (dissolution, depolymerization or conversion) is needed to develop a circular economy, in which purified monomers and/or polymers can be used in similar applications as the virgin material, which is produced from fossil fuels. Moreover, the final chemical recycled product must fulfill specifications in function of each application.

Very recently, the legislation (Stockholm Convention, REACH, ...) for plastics materials and especially for food contact materials (FCM) pay attention to Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) because of their persistence and human health consequences. These compounds are mainly used as fire retardants, processing aids, fluorination treatment and moisture resistance. However, the exact nature and amount of PFASs present in the plastic waste to be recycled are difficult to predict and are still unknown.

To overcome this huge analytical issue, this project proposed to develop selective extraction methods for PFASs associated to a specific Fluorine (F) method by tandem mass spectrometry inductively coupled plasma (ICP-MS/MS). Combustion ion chromatography (CIC) will be also used to evaluate the F mass balance in plastics. Trace analysis of PFASs, the minimization of F pollutions and the complexity of plastic samples will make this project as very challenging for the student.

Internship objectives :

The quantification of F in plastic samples is clearly missing to fulfill both the future legislation in chemical recycling of plastics and the future specifications of IFPEN processes. The main objective of the project is to propose an Interlaboratory and inter-method study on total fluorine in plastics.

The scientific methodology is the following:

  1. State of the art of extraction methods for fluorine compounds (ASE, MAE, SFE, …)
  2. Development of extraction methods and quantification of F by ICP-MS/MS at IFPEN (according to J. Feldmann recently published works)
  3. Comparison with CIC (or external lab) on a limited set of plastic samples.
  4. Transfer of skills in the lab, presentations, report and publication in a scientific journal.

Profile

Bac+5 student (Master or engineering school) in analytical chemistry or materials engineering.

  • A first experience in extraction techniques or ICP/MS with knowledge in the field of polymers and recycling as well as a good level in English will be appreciated.
