Lignocellulosic biomass is composed of cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin. While the first two fractions are already widely used in industrial processes such as the production of paper or alcohol, lignin is often obtained as a by-product and burned directly to recover energy for other processes. The valorization of lignin into products with higher added value is hindered by its recalcitrance and complex structure. Lignin is composed of different aromatic ring structures connected by C-C and C-O bonds, which makes it resistant and renders the depolymerization of lignin challenging.
Despite the variability in the composition of lignin, ether bonds such as β-O-4 remain the most abundant type of bond. Therefore, understanding the mechanisms involved in the cleavage of this C-O is very important for improving the depolymerization of lignin and ultimately, its valorization.
This work assesses the feasibility of studying the solvolysis of a lignin model compound containing a β-O-4 bond (2-phenoxy-1-phenylethanol) in a sealed crucible used as a reactor. The absorption or release of heat during the process is monitored using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). This approach makes it possible to obtain a representative set of results in a short period of time while using fewer resources and less energy.
A limited number of batch experiments may subsequently be conducted under selected conditions to validate the results obtained from the DSC data. The objective is to determine the kinetic parameters of the solvolysis reaction.
