Internship subject Needs for analyses (online) for the recycling of plastics/textiles
The management of end-of-life plastics and textiles is a major societal challenge. Chemical recycling is emerging as a complementary technology to mechanical recycling because it can handle more complex feedstocks. Indeed, these materials can include several types of polymers in mixtures, as well as additives at concentrations ranging from a few hundred ppm to a few percent.
The performance of the process depends on adjusting the recycling conditions according to the composition of the plastics or textiles entering the process. This raises two characterization needs: - Analysis of the input loads. Hyperspectral imaging (called HSI: Hyperspectral Imaging), which relies on the acquisition of data across an extended wavelength spectrum (Visible and Near Infrared), coupled with chemometric data processing, enables rapid and accurate material characterization through nondestructive identification of chemical signatures. Some limitations encountered with the current method require further development of this analysis. - Real-time monitoring of the chemical recycling process of these polymers/textiles. Spectral
analyses such as Raman, IR, UV, etc. are easily implementable inline on a process and transferable from the laboratory to the pilot unit, to the plant. This involves acquiring a spectral database obtained under process conditions and exploiting this signal through the development of models that link it to the key process control parameters.
Description :
The internship objectives are therefore:
• Literature review on analytical solutions (equipment and data processing)
• In HSI: Becoming familiar with the camera and associated processing software to consolidate the preexisting database and enrich the classification and quantification models
• For online analysis: once the most relevant technique is identified, it will be necessary to acquire the data (in the laboratory via reaction monitoring) for method development to meet the characterization needs of the process, with a view to its future implementation on a pilot unit.
• The capitalization of this work will be achieved by writing an end-of-internship report and a defense.
All work will be carried out in connection with research teams involved in plastics recycling at IFPEN.
Required profile :
Master’s level (Bac+5) / 3rd-year engineering student in industrial analysis or analytical chemistry
French or English language, enthusiasm, autonomy and good team spirit. Interest in field/lab work and experimental rigor.
Solid knowledge in analytical chemistry, data processing (notions of chemometrics (PCA, PLS, cross-validation) and/or machine learning). Knowledge of polymers will be a plus.
