  • à gagner en efficacité énergétique ;
  • à réduire les émissions de CO2 et de polluants ;
  • à améliorer l’empreinte environnementale de l’industrie et des transports ;

Software development of an optical air quality sensor – Definition of calibration and tuning protocols

Air quality is a major concern of our century. It is impacted by human (industry, transport, agriculture, domestic heating, etc.) and natural activities (volcanic eruptions, decomposition of organic matter, etc.), and can have a deep impact on our life quality and our health.

For several years, IFP Energies nouvelles has been developing an innovative solution for measuring pollutants based on UV spectroscopy. This solution, named ELEMENTS, very versatile and cost-effective, is today used in applications dedicated to vehicle emissions (REAL-e), industrial emissions and atmospheric measurement (FLAIR). The internship will focus on developing the calibration tools mandatory for the evolution of the ELEMENTS sensor, as well as adding new species of interest in the algorithm.

The characterization needs of the manufactured sensors are increasing, as well as the molecules of interest. A dedicated test facility has been designed, capable of managing the injection of pollutants and particles at various concentrations. During the internship, new molecules will have to be characterized, integrated into the algorithm and validated.

The course has two objectives:

One is experimental and aims to adapt and use the test facility to meet calibration requirements. The second is linked to the integration of new molecules into the algorithm based on literature data and experimentally generated data.

Thus, during the 6 months of the internship, the intern will have to carry out a complete engineering work, ranging from the bibliography to validation, according to the following plan:

  1. Familiarization with ELEMENTS technology (hardware, theoretical bases of spectroscopy & chemometrics)
  2. Getting started with the “air quality” test bench: management, installation of sensors, adaptation as needed
  3. Establish a calibration methodology and then automate it. Test this methodology, apply it to one or more measurement systems. Write a technical note about this methodology for the next users.
  4. Familiarize yourself with the ELEMENTS test database and complete it with the tests carried out.
  5. Improve the spectrum processing algorithm by proposing and defining new indicators of measurement and signal validity. These proposals can be validated on the database (non-regression basis) and on the dedicated test facility.
  6. Validate the work on a complex gas matrix (Depending on opportunities: air quality bench, vehicle, other...)

Profile requirements :

Master 2 degree (5 years of high studies) or final year of engineering school motivated to carry out research and development work in the exciting field of air quality.

The student will be integrated into a dynamic team focused on “optical diagnostics”: research engineers, specialized technicians, within a project dedicated to air quality.

Required skills:

  • Signal processing
  • Optics and interest in measurement and experimentation
  • Mastery of programming tools (Matlab, Python, etc.)
  • Autonomy
  • Ability to work in a team and communicate about your work.

Duration and period of the internship : 6 months on 2024

Practical information: The internship will take place at IFP Energies nouvelles in Rueil-Malmaison. A monthly allowance will be paid to the intern (if not otherwise paid).
